Ven Pongal (Milagu Pongal)
Pongal is healthy, easy to make and popular dish of south India, especially Tamil Nadu. This is a combination of Rice, moong dhal and spices like pepper, cumin and jeera (cumin seeds). Give it a try and enjoy.

Ingredients
Raw rice – 1 cup
Moon dhal - ½ cup
Asafeotida (perungayam) - ½ tsp
Curry leaves- 1 sprig
Pepper- 2 tsp
Cumin seeds – 2 tsp
Ginger (chopped)- 1 tsp
Green chillies (chopped)-1
Cashew nuts chopped – 10 or 15
Oil - 2 tbsp
Ghee -1 tbsp
(If you want to add more ghee, reduce the oil content).
Directions
Wash and soak the rice and dhal for atleast an hour.
Pressure cook the rice and dhal along with asafeotida, salt, half the quantity of cuminseeds, pepper, curryleaves in nearly 5-6 cups of water(according to the quality of your rice)
After it is done. Give it a quick mix.
Take another pan, add oil as well as ghee, temper with remaining cumin seeds, pepper, curry leaves, chopped ginger, chopped green chillies and cashew nuts. Pour it over the Rice, dhal mixture and mix thoroughly.
Serve hot.
The Best accompaniment for Ven pongal is Coconut Chutney and Sambar.
